COMPANY NEWS

Visiting our Pole Supplier

This May we received a large order for 25 tipis including poles, which means that we had to get 500 poles from Montana to Washington within two months. We were lucky that the pole yard had enough trees cut, but it is still a lot of work to make 500 high quality tipi poles out of a pile of cut lodge pole pines. Nomadics has been working with Whispering Pine Pole Company for many decades, but last time Jeb and I visited Sue and Greg was in 2016. So I decided to stop by on my road trip through Montana and visit our old friends. Their operation is really impressive, and I got reminded how much decision making, work and care goes into making each tipi pole, let alone 500 of them, as each pole gets handled 3 times at least – We are grateful that Sue and Greg could make miracles happen again. To see the process of making a tipi pole, you can watch our video below.

THE ART DEPARTMENT

“4th of July” Tipis

Every year we seem to get a few requests of tipis with a distinct “July 4th” patriotic theme, which in general consists of the color combination red, white and blue, as well as stars and eagles, lots of eagles!! We like painting these majestic birds in various flight positions, whether it is a golden eagle, bald eagle or just eagle silhouettes. We particularly enjoy giving the theme a more Native tone, by adding horses and feathers.

TIPI VACATION

Ellensburg KOA Journey, WA

On my way to the Seattle Folklife Festival, I stopped by the Ellensburg KOA for an overnight in their beautifully furnished Glamping Tipis. Their three tipis are facing the Yakima River and are equipped with an outdoor grill, picnic table and comfortable chairs to lounge in and listen to the river and the birds. All tipis are 22ft and are outfitted with a queen bed as well as up to 4 twin beds (2 beds, 2 pull out mattresses). Electricity and WIFI is provided as well as a TV, fridge, microwave, and Keurig coffee maker. – This KOA also offers a small pool, a store, a children’s play area and is located right next to the I-90. It is a great place to stop for a night or two on your road trip throughout the Pacific Northwest.

WE CARE

Supporting the Unkitawa Reentry Program, WA

Each year during the Seattle’s Folklife Festival, the indigenous community has their own exhibit right next to the Space Needle. At their booths they present various non-profit organizations operating in the Seattle / Washington area, and they sell indigenous made drums, jewellery and regalia. In their event tent, they showcase various singers, dancers and drummers and they exhibit 4 tipis and a canoe, as part of a showcase of various indigenous traditions.
It is a very festive ambiance and I enjoyed learning and meeting new people. I had the honor of meeting Kyle, the director of Unkitawa, an intertribal organization that serves all Native People, not just Natives from the Pacific North West. One of their projects is the Reentry Program, which provides sweat lodges, drumming/song classes and beading/regalia making classes to incarcerated Native People and provides support for their reentry phase. Jeremy, the program director, explained to me in detail the scope of their program and I was so impressed with their work and dedication that I donated a 16ft tipi for their prison project. Thank you, Gary, Kyle and Jeremy, for letting me be part of your celebration.
