Tipi Calendar, May 2025: Zahnive, Siletz Powwow, OR

The Siletz Powwow committee had purchased 10 Nomadics tipis and had raffled off a stay in the tipis during the powwow. Nicole visited the powwow and as she was taking pictures of the tipis, Zahnive walked by and graciously gave permission to be photographed. Zahnive is Shoshone-Bannock from Fort Hall, ID.

COMPANY NEWS

It’s Tipi Wedding Season

A teepee is not just a very meaningful backdrop to an outdoor-inspired wedding, it also makes a statement about your respect and reverence towards the indigenous cultures of the land we live on. If your shared values include a deep desire to live in harmony with Mother Earth, and to cherish diversity, equality and inclusion for all people, then a tipi can set the tone. It can be used during the wedding as a place to get ready for the ceremony, after the wedding as guest accommodation or even as a wedding gift for the happy couple’s wedding night.
If you choose to gift a tipi, think about letting the bride and groom design it according to their shared dreams and visions. Designing tipi art together can be a beautiful experience for a young couple, before or after the wedding. And then the newlyweds might decide to paint it themselves – or our artists can translate their ideas onto the cover, liner or door.

ART DEPARTMENT

Translating a Customer’s Vision

There is nothing more exciting than discussing a customer’s visions and having the time and budget to translate it onto the canvas. One of the most intricate projects we received in recent years was this computer generated graphic with rainbow colors, beehive and snake patterns, star constellations and a third eye watching over it all… – Vivid colors, fading from one to another and overlaid with stark black shapes – certainly a challenge for our artistic team.
Kris worked with the client to help refine her image into something that would work utilizing the media at hand, and also fit within her allotted budget. Mixing and matching colors, creating fades, the artistry and precision required in order to replicate a computer generated image into a fully painted tipi cover, are all within the abilities of our talented team of artists. Nothing is too complicated. Kris and her staff are ready for the next challenge. If you have something in mind, even if it is just a customized door flap – Let them know.

TIPS AND TRICKS

Critter Safety

We have 6 tipis set up outside of our office, and they give us ample experiences on how to deal with critters. We had Bunnies making their nests behind the pillows, chipmunks stacking their nuts and seeds in the corners and mice chewing up our blankets and bedding. To help with critter control, we started sewing heavy netting onto the bottom of our tipi covers (we now sell it as ‘CritterGuard’) and urge customers to weight it down well, so critters cannot come into the tipi anymore.
To install the critter guard correctly, you can weigh it down with bricks, stones, logs or pile gravel on top of it. We method we tried out is using heavy horse mats. Once the tipi is set up, measure the distance between each pole, then cut the horse mat into 6 inch wide strips and the exact length between the poles.
Once you secured all the critter guard to the ground with the horse mats, you are ready to put up the liner. The liner also needs to be weighted down with something heavy that goes onto the 6” fabric lip. Again, use bricks, stones, tiles or logs – or our 6ft long canvas tubes filled with sand or gravel (we call them ‘sand snakes’). We even have a door snake that is 3ft wide and fits right onto the critter guard beneath the door. With this, you have effectively sealed off your tipi – except smart critters might still find their way in through the door…
